Event Communications Built for the Elements: Powering the WSL at Bells Beach, Newcastle & the Gold Coast Pro

Sand, corrosive saltwater, crashing surf, and thousands of spectators. When it comes to outdoor event management, beachside competitions are the ultimate stress test for your communication network.

Over the last few months, the Roar Radios team has been heavily involved in the operations behind three of the biggest stops on the Australian surfing calendar: the RipCurl Pro at Bells Beach, Newcastle SURFEST, and the Gold Coast Pro.

We worked alongside the World Surf League (WSL) and local event crews to ensure their site communications cut through the noise, survived the elements, and didn't miss a beat. Here is a look at the commercial radio gear we deployed to make it happen across three massive events.

The Challenge: Why Standard Event Radios Fail on the Coast

Running an event footprint that spans hundreds of meters of open beach is a logistical nightmare if your comms aren't up to scratch. Event organisers need to coordinate water safety teams, broadcast crews, security, and medical staff instantly.

In these environments, standard two-way radios fail for a few reasons:

  1. Audio interference: The roar of the ocean and the noise of massive crowds easily drown out cheap speakers.

  2. Environmental damage: Fine sand and saltwater will quickly destroy radios that aren't properly IP-rated.

  3. Coverage dropouts: Moving from the shoreline to concrete production bunkers requires serious signal penetration.

To combat this, we deployed a heavy-duty, purpose-built Motorola radio fleet capable of handling the harsh coastal conditions across Victoria, NSW, and Queensland.

The Hardware: Our Event Radio Deployment

To ensure seamless, site-wide communication, we equipped the WSL and event management teams with the exact gear required for extreme outdoor conditions:

  • Motorola R7: The backbone of the operation. The R7 features next-level adaptive dual-microphone noise cancellation. Even with a 6-foot wave crashing in the background or a roaring crowd in Newcastle, the audio comes through crystal clear. They are rugged, highly water-resistant, and built for this exact type of commercial use.

  • Heavy-Duty RSMs (Remote Speaker Microphones): We paired the R7s with shoulder-mounted RSMs. This allows staff and security to leave the main radio securely clipped to their belt or harness while maintaining instant, push-to-talk access.

  • Surveillance Earpieces: For the production and broadcast crews who need to monitor comms discreetly while managing the live feed, clear earpieces were essential to cut out external noise.

  • Protective Water Bags: For the water-patrol and jet-ski crews sitting out in the impact zone, we utilized heavy-duty waterproof radio bags, ensuring the gear stayed fully functional and protected even when completely submerged.

Getting the Job Done on the Sand

A massive shoutout to the World Surf League and local event crews on the ground across Bells Beach, Newcastle, and the Gold Coast. It takes serious coordination and long hours to pull off events of this scale, and we’re just glad our gear could play a part in keeping the teams connected and the sites running smoothly.

While we were holding down the fort back at HQ, we're just glad our radios got to enjoy the beachfront office. πŸŒŠπŸ“»
